24 hours in Paris!
The only positive aspect of having connections on every single one of our Round the World flights is that we got to spend 24 hours in Paris on our way to Italy, which was just the right amount of time for me to check it off the list. We walked through the beautiful Arc de Triomph, and enjoyed a tasty and surprisingly inexpensive baguette on the Champs E'lysees, and yes, I embarassingly pronounced this like a true American 'champs' as in 'the breakfast of champs' and Elysees like Ulysses S. Grant but with an 'E'. I'm so cultured!
After food, we quickly escaped the Champs E'lysees before Sammar was drawn in by the shimmer of diamonds from Cartier and the massively overpriced bags of Luis Vuitton, which I will never understand why any woman would pay for. Next, we wandered through the Museo D'Orsay, exploring the world of impressionism featuring many of Monet, Renoir, Manet, and the sleeper favorite Alfred Sisley. While I would not refer to myself as art afficionado, I learned to appreciate some of the finer works that we saw and to finally realize some of the differences between styles like neo-impressionism and impressionism.
From there, we attempted to get off the beaten path by wandering the back streets between the D'Orsay and the Eiffel Tower and we very narrowly avoided a crushing rain storm by sliding into an expensive cafe for the requisite French Onion Soup, which I again embarrassed myself by asking Sammar if in France they just called it Onion Soup, and 6 euro cappucino.
We finished the afternoon relaxing on the grass in front of the Eiffel Tower, which was beautiful to see from afar, but surprisingly industrial-looking from up close. That being said, the view from across the water was truly amazing and was definitely something that I was excited to see! Paris, you are officially checked off my list, now on to Italy!
